Cycling and Bicycle related accidents on the roads in Oklahoma are on the rise.
As more Oklahomans are getting out and focusing on health and fitness, many are taking up bicycling as a means of exercise and transportation. The only problem – most people in Oklahoma City and Lawton aren’t used to sharing the road with the eco-friendly cyclists. We have very few bike paths on our city streets, but did you know that bicyclists have the same right to be on the road as any other motorist?
Unfortunately, accidents involving cars and bicyclists can take place every day, especially near college and university campuses and in urban areas. Most happen when bicyclists are attempting to signal to turn left or right. The fact is most Oklahoma drivers forget what those signals look like shortly after taking their driving tests and are not prepared to yield. Other times, motorists may not allow enough room between the vehicle and the cyclist and a side-swipe accident can occur.
However, sadly, the most frequent bicycle accidents aren’t accidents at all but incidents of driver road rage. These can be verbal or physical assaults or even a motorist or vehicle passenger throwing a water bottle or soda pop can at a cyclist. These assaults are all illegal and considered highly dangerous incidents that can lead to serious injuries.
